💫 The astronomers at the University of Valencia have recorded a powerful flare on a magnetar, a neutron star with an extremely strong magnetic field, 13 million light-years away from Earth in a group of galaxies in the Sculptor constellation. It all happened in just 0.16 seconds.
In a fraction of a second, the flare released energy equivalent to what our Sun emits in 100,000 years. This huge explosion got the nickname "space monster".
If the magnetar had been located within one-sixth of the way to the Moon (about 40,000 miles), it would have wiped out all credit cards data on Earth. Magnetars are neutron stars having the strongest magnetic fields, which are 1,000 times more powerful than those of other neutron stars.
They are very hot, up to a million degrees possibly, extremely radioactive, and have incredibly intense magnetic fields.
Magnetars are some of the scariest objects in the Galaxy. The cause of a magnetar flare is thought to be due to instability in the star's magnetosphere or an "earthquake" in its crust.
The changes that are happening in space and on our planet are caused by an astronomical cyclicity for which we are totally unprepared. We are helpless to face these monsters!
What would happen if such a monster appeared in the Solar System?
High-energy cosmic rays could drastically change the planet's climate, limiting the access of sunlight to the planet's surface, and causing an ice age or all life on the surface of our planet could be destroyed by this powerful flare in a fraction of a second.
